"Cannonball Lake" Benchmark Assessment short story for Heinemann Publishing

In 2020, I was hired by Heinemann Publishing, the educational imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, to write original teen fiction for their revamping of the latest edition of the Fountas & Pinnell reading system.

My story "Cannonball Lake," published in the new edition, focused on a crisis of empathy and what it means to see beyond the surface. When a young boy mistakenly crushes a bully's glasses jumping off the dock at a town swimming hole, he must own up to his mistake even if it means putting himself in harm's way.

"Like Machines" - Finalist - Owl Canyon Press Short Story Competition

Cowbots, Eddie Poe, Cody Decoder

I have 3 original series currently in development for educational publisher Pioneer Valley Books. Cowbots follows the adventures of robot cowboys on Mars, Eddie Poe tells the story of a young teenage Edgar Alan Poe in Richmond, VA, and Cody Decoder focuses on a plucky middle school detective and her brilliant cat, Query. Here is a sample of a layout of one Cowbots story currently in production (August 2022).
